5 Best Churches in the Marshall Islands to Experience as a Visitor

Tucked away in Uliga, the Cathedral of the Assumption is the main Catholic church in Majuro and one of the most atmospheric places to experience local life on the island.

Built in 1898, it serves as the seat of the Apostolic Prefecture of the Marshall Islands and features striking geometric inlaid tile floors and a genuinely warm local parish. The Saturday evening English Mass runs at 6:30 pm, while the Marshallese-language service takes place Sunday morning at 9:30 am; both run for around one hour.

Expect communal singing and the lovely tradition of shaking hands and making peace at the close of the service.

Dress respectfully (skirts below the knee for women, long pants for men) and don't leave without checking out the street art at the adjacent Assumption School. Afterwards, grab a hot dog from the nearby supermarket for a true local post-church experience.

One of the most authentic cultural experiences you can have in Majuro is attending a Sunday morning service at Uliga United Church of Christ, a large and welcoming Protestant congregation in the heart of Uliga.

The service begins at 10:30 am and runs for around two hours, conducted largely in Marshallese, with hymns, scripture readings, pastoral prayer and choral responses from the youth choir filling the spacious church hall.

The programme follows a traditional Protestant order of worship, moving from the call to worship and invocation through to the sermon and benediction, with the youth choir performing at several points throughout.

It's a genuinely moving experience, even if you don't understand a word, and locals are warm and welcoming to respectful visitors. Dress modestly and arrive a few minutes early to settle in.

Along the lagoon side of Majuro, Ajeltake United Church of Christ (known locally as Ajeltake Protestant Church) offers one of the more intimate Sunday worship experiences on the atoll, a quieter, village-paced alternative to the larger congregations in town.

The service starts at 10:30 am and typically runs for around two hours, conducted almost entirely in Marshallese.

Expect a full traditional Protestant order of worship: an opening call to worship and invocation, scripture readings, pastoral prayer, a sermon and a closing benediction, with the youth choir weaving through the programme at several points along the way.

Even without a word of Marshallese, the hymns and choral responses from the youth choir fill the church hall in a way that needs no translation. Dress modestly, arrive a few minutes before 10:30 am and you'll be warmly welcomed.

A Sunday drive along the lagoon road towards Laura Beach comes with an unexpected cultural highlight: the many small churches facing the roadside.

Time it right and you may hear choral singing drifting through the open doors, creating a rather lovely soundtrack for the journey.

When the singing catches your attention, pull over somewhere safe and quietly pop your head through the doorway to soak up the full ambience. Visitors are generally welcome when they are respectful, although it is best not to interrupt the service or start snapping photos.

Just remember to dress modestly before stopping. Beachwear, swimwear and skimpy clothing are not appropriate inside a church, so save the shorts and swimming gear for Laura Beach afterwards.
