Bringing your own bicycle is possible, but you will need to pack it properly and confirm space with your airline before travelling. This option is most worthwhile for experienced cyclists planning several long rides across Majuro Atoll, especially if they prefer a particular frame size or saddle.

Bringing Your Bike on United Airlines

United Airlines accepts properly packed bicycles as checked baggage. Your bike counts towards your checked-baggage allowance, so the normal bag fee and any applicable overweight charge may still apply. United currently waives its oversized-baggage fee for bicycles that meet its packing requirements.

Pack the bike inside a purpose-built bicycle case or securely sealed box with protective padding. Fix the handlebars sideways and remove the pedals, or wrap protruding parts thoroughly so they cannot damage the bike or other baggage. Depending on the box, you may also need to remove the front wheel.

Checked-baggage restrictions can vary by route and destination. Confirm acceptance through United before travelling to Majuro, particularly if your itinerary includes the Island Hopper or a smaller connecting aircraft.

Bringing Your Bike on Nauru Airlines

Nauru Airlines treats bicycles as sporting equipment. There is no separate free sporting-equipment allowance, so the packed bicycle is included in your checked-baggage allowance and excess charges may apply. The airline asks passengers travelling with sporting goods to contact reservations before departure.

Your bike must be securely packed in suitable materials. Oversized or particularly heavy boxes may need to travel as freight, and the airline may refuse equipment when operational or aircraft-weight restrictions prevent carriage. Checked baggage can also be transferred to a later flight when necessary.

Additional baggage can be purchased in increments from 11 lb (5 kg) to 55 lb (25 kg) up to 24 hours before departure, subject to available space. Unaccompanied baggage sent through the airline’s cargo service may be another option for a lengthy cycling trip.

Cycling distances on Majuro Atoll can be deceptive. The road is almost completely flat, but the tropical heat, traffic and frequent stops to some interesting sights can make a ride take longer than the map suggests.

How Long Does it Take to Cycle Across Majuro?

The main road across Majuro Atoll stretches for roughly 30 mi (50 km), forming one continuous paved highway between the eastern business districts of Delap, Uliga and Djarrit, commonly known as DUD, and the western community of Laura.

At a relaxed cycling speed of 7.5 mph (12 kph), completing the full road one way takes approximately 4 hrs 10 mins without extended stops. A return journey would cover around 60 mi (100 km) and require more than 8 hours of cycling, making it a serious full-day ride rather than a casual outing.
