Information, Shops & Services on Majuro

Majuro is the easiest place in the Marshall Islands for food shopping, with the country’s largest supermarkets, convenience stores, produce stalls and restaurants. Self-catering is certainly possible, especially if you are staying somewhere with a kitchen, but imported products can be expensive due to freight costs and stock depends heavily on recent shipments.

Majuro Supermarkets

Majuro’s main supermarkets offer the widest selection of groceries, imported products, frozen food, fresh produce, drinks, toiletries and household essentials. Opening hours are generally long, although they vary between stores.

The main supermarkets on Majuro are:

• K&K Island Pride Supermarket, Lagoon Road, Delap Park, Delap
• K&K Island Pride Supermarket, Lagoon Road, Rairok (Next to Lojkar Apartments & Hotel)
• Payless Supermarket, Lagoon Road, Uliga

K&K Island Pride has the broadest overall range, while Payless is often one of the better options for fruit and vegetables. Check imported produce carefully before buying, as freshness can vary after the long journey to Majuro.

Convenience Stores

Majuro also has many smaller convenience stores, which are handy for bottled drinks, snacks, instant noodles, canned food, toiletries and quick takeaway meals. Some are conventional walk-in stores, while the smallest roadside shops operate through a service window and are commonly referred to locally as “Chinese stores”.

Restaurants on Majuro

Majuro has the widest choice of cafés, restaurants, bakeries, food trucks and takeaways in the Marshall Islands. You will find Marshallese food, fresh tuna, Taiwanese cooking, Filipino favourites, American-style meals and international dishes, although some of the best places are hidden along back roads or behind petrol stations.

Medication at Supermarkets

Light medications, first-aid supplies, baby products, feminine hygiene products and toiletries are sold in supermarkets and convenience stores around Majuro.

EZ Price Mart has one of the widest selections of over-the-counter products, including pain relief, cold and flu remedies, antacids, creams, bandages, antiseptics and other first-aid supplies.

K&K Island Pride Supermarket also has a smaller pharmacy section with cold and flu tablets, allergy relief, stomach remedies, cough sweets, sunscreen and insect repellent.

Pharmacy on Majuro

The only dedicated pharmacy on Majuro is located at Majuro Hospital. Prescription medication is supplied after a consultation with a doctor, so visitors cannot simply walk up to the pharmacy counter and purchase prescription medicine.

On arrival at the Majuro Hospital Clinic (entrance is down the road with the International Convention Centre), take a number from the machine at the front counter and wait to register. Consultations are handled on a first-come, first-served basis, with the clinic open from 8 am to 5 pm Monday to Friday and during the afternoon on weekends.

For basic over-the-counter medication, hospital staff may direct you to supermarkets or convenience stores instead.

Medical Centres and Hospitals on Majuro

Emergency doctors are available at Majuro Hospital 24/7, while routine consultations follow the clinic hours listed above.

• Majuro Hospital, Delap Back Road, Delap (Emergency turn-off next to K&K Island Pride Supermarket. General parking is farther along the road beside the Convention Centre)
• Laura Clinic, Laura (Between Lagoon Road and the Ocean Road, approximately 990 yards/900 m south of the Laura Ball Field)
• Woja Clinic, Lagoon Road, Woja (Next to Woja Elementary School)

Need to fuel up? Fuel stations on Majuro tend to be open roughly from 6 am to 9 pm, seven days a week, although some close earlier or have shorter weekend hours.

Note that fuel stations are fully serviced, and an attendant will fill your vehicle for you. Simply tell the attendant how much fuel you would like.

When it comes to staying connected, we recommend making use of your accommodation’s WiFi where possible, although quality varies considerably. Otherwise, Majuro has a local 4G phone network, public WiFi locations and a main post office for sending mail and buying stamps.

Phone Network

There is one main phone network in the Marshall Islands, operated by the National Telecommunications Authority (NTA). Physical SIM cards and eSIMs with mobile data are available from the NTA headquarters in Uliga (located on one of the inland roads, but easily found on GPS maps). They are open from 7 am to 7 pm, Monday to Saturday.

Bring your passport when purchasing a SIM or eSIM. Card payments are accepted.

Post Offices

Majuro’s main post office is run by the Marshall Islands Postal Service Authority. Services include postage stamps, domestic and international mail and parcel handling.

The post office is open from 8:30 am to 4 pm Monday to Saturday. It is closed on Sundays and public holidays.

The Marshall Islands Postal Service Authority is located at Main Road, Delap-Uliga-Djarrit (Across the road from Hotel Robert Reimers and next to the Bank of the Marshall Islands).

You will also find a FedEx Station at the Central Maritime Agency, 1 Uliga Majuro Main Road, Uliga.

Internet and WiFi

Free WiFi is offered by many hotels and accommodations, although some properties charge for access. Connections may use traditional WiFi codes or Starlink, and reliability can range from perfectly usable to an excellent opportunity to put your phone down.

Public WiFi is also available at selected places around Majuro, including:

While banks are usually a traveller’s best friend for currency exchange, things work a little differently on Majuro. The local banks generally only exchange foreign currency for account holders, and opening an account usually requires a social security number, so this is not a practical option for travellers.

Your best option for accessing cash is to withdraw US dollars from an ATM. Bank of Guam ATMs accept many international cards, including Visa, Mastercard, JCB and Discover, although transaction fees apply.

Bank of Guam operates from 9 am to 4 pm, Monday to Friday, and is closed on weekends. Bank of the Marshall Islands operates from 9 am to 6 pm, Monday; 9 am to 1 pm, Tuesday; 9 am to 5 pm, Wednesday; 9 am to 6 pm, Thursday; 9 am to 1 pm, Friday; and 9 am to 5 pm, Saturday.
