How to Get Internet & WiFi in the Marshall Islands

WiFi comes included with many accommodations across the Marshall Islands at no extra charge. Connection quality can be a little hit-and-miss, however, so it is worth managing your expectations before scheduling that important video call from a remote beach bungalow.

Some properties have upgraded to Starlink satellite internet, which generally offers faster and more reliable speeds.

Even where WiFi is available, the signal may be strongest around reception areas, restaurants and other communal spaces rather than inside every room. Save large downloads and video calls for when you have a strong connection (your holiday photos can wait a few hours).

Public WiFi is available at a small selection of places around Majuro, although it is not as widespread or consistently advertised as you might be used to back home. It never hurts to ask staff whether WiFi is available and whether you need a password or purchase to connect.

Another reliable way to access the internet in the Marshall Islands is to purchase a local SIM card or eSIM and use mobile data. This generally provides a more consistent connection than relying entirely on public WiFi hotspots.

The country’s only mobile network is operated by the Marshall Islands National Telecommunications Authority (NTA). Physical SIM cards and eSIMs are available with prepaid plans for short visits, longer stays and travellers who need calls and texts as well as data.

You can also turn on WiFi tethering in your phone’s settings to share your mobile data with a laptop, tablet or another traveller. Keep an eye on automatic updates and cloud backups, as they have a sneaky habit of eating through data.

Portable Modems (MiFi)

Portable WiFi devices, also known as MiFis, can be purchased from NTA. These pocket-sized modems use the local mobile network to create a private WiFi hotspot for several devices.

A portable modem can be especially useful when travelling with family, working from a laptop or using a phone that is not compatible with the local network. Ask NTA staff which data plan is best suited to the device before purchasing it, then keep it charged, because even paradise cannot rescue a flat battery.

1. Accommodation WiFi is Common, but Quality Varies
   Most accommodations offer WiFi, usually included in the room rate. However, access may be limited, slower than expected or restricted to communal areas, while a few properties charge separately or have no dedicated connection.
2. Ask for the WiFi Details When You Check In
   Some properties require a password or voucher from reception. Ask where the strongest signal can be found too, as the answer may be the lobby rather than your room.
3. Public WiFi is Limited
   You can find free internet at a handful of restaurants, bars and public facilities around Majuro, but there is no widespread public hotspot network. Do not rely on stumbling across free WiFi whenever you need it.
4. Mobile Data Makes a Useful Backup
   An NTA SIM card, eSIM or portable WiFi device gives you another way to connect when accommodation WiFi is slow or unavailable. Coverage is strongest around Majuro, although signals can be weaker in Raitok and Ajeltake and may vary considerably on the outer islands.
5. Download Important Information Before Going Remote
   Save offline maps, booking confirmations, travel documents and entertainment before heading to the outer islands or more isolated beaches. Internet outages and weak signals are possible, so a little preparation can save a lot of staring at a loading circle.
